As avid travelers and food lovers, visiting Southern France together has always been one of our biggest dreams. Last April, after nine years and a lot of searching, planning and mapping, we finally made it happen!
The magic of our “French affair” lies in our love for French gastronomy, especially French cheese! Therefore, when we planned our trip, we accurately took notes of all the things we wanted to taste! After two weeks and 4200 km, we left that foodie fairyland with a lot to write about.
We’re happy to share our adventures and tips with anyone who wants to visit this amazing part of the world!
Among the places you surely cannot miss, there’s the beautiful Verdon Gorges! This huge and stunning Canyon, dug by Verdon river, is situated between the two “départements” of Var and Alpes de Haute Provence.
We arrived to the Canyon after driving along the beautiful Sainte Croix Lake, the widest of Verdon’s lakes (10 km) and the third largest lake of France, full of people camping, kayaking and windsurfing.
The “tail” of the lake climbs up to Verdon Canyon. Mother Nature really did a great job here: vertiginous gorges, calcareous rocks and incredible views make this place an absolute must-see!
We also reached Moustiers Sainte Marie, one of “Les plus beaux villages” of France, famous for its ceramics. You’ll love walking along its narrow streets…and then the fountains, the lovely shops, the buildings facing out over the river that crosses the town!
It was dinner time when we finished our visit and we decided to eat at a restaurant (very good!), with a beautiful view over the river (the lamb-filled tomato was superb!).
What to see in Moustiers : the ceramics museum; the Chapel of Notre-Dame de Beauvoir, on top of the town (you’ll reach it climbing 262 steps); the town church; the beautiful fountains; the star hanging between two crags (the legend says a crusade knight put it up after he survived the Crusade, as an ex-voto to the Virgin Mary)
Where to eat: La Treille Muscate, Place de l’Eglise – Moustiers Sainte Marie
Where to sleep: we stayed at a lovely B&B, L’Odalyre, in a beautiful bedroom, with free wi-fi and a delicious breakfast! The owner is lovely!
What to see in the surroundings: Plateau de Valensole, a beautiful valley famous for its lavender. In late June/July when the lavender blooms, you’ll drive along purple carpets!

Uuuuuh, I’d say the Banon, which is typical of the South…it’s made of goat cheese!

I know- and it becomes analysis paralysis when you see the plethora of cheese offerings behind a glass case! Sheep, goat, cow … soft, hard, waaaah. So little time to taste them all. Hahahahah
